Haptic Object
The pages in this book are made from handmade flax papers that were pulled successively from the beater while it continued to run. The resulting sheets were then submerged in an indigo vat that was allowed to slowly exhaust with each dip. The sheets were then brushed with konn’yaku paste, and folded and crumpled repeatedly through a process called momigami to strengthen and soften the paper. Each page varies in size, texture, and color depending on its place in this process. Over time, as this book is exposed to repeated handling and manipulation, the paper fibers will continue to strengthen resulting in an object that feels more like fabric than paper.
This book invites handling with the following prompt:
Hold this book in your hands. Squeeze it. Smell its pages. Run your fingers over each crumpled sheet. Feel the softness of the papers as the deckle edges brush against the palm of your hand. Listen to the sound of the pages as you fan them though your fingers. Consider for a moment that your handling of this book has contributed to its character, as have all the hands who will come to hold it over its life of use. It is more durable and resilient because of the attention you have given it.
